2026 Dubbed the Year of the Amphibian Adventure.

My key observation from the recent indie games event was a delight to watch, my biggest takeaway was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the showcased gamesโ€”Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hopsโ€”in some way feature these hoppy characters. Given that a band of frogs is termed an army, it seems they are taking over the industry.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Frogs are not at all new to the world of games. Ever since the era of Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a niche presence. Yet, their popularity has seemingly surged in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an overwhelming flood of results. Although, some of these are obscure titles, a sizable number are legitimate Frog Games.

A Data-Driven Dive

To quantify this phenomenon, I conducted a thorough analysis into the recent history of hoppy gaming on Steam. My methodology was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The findings reveal an unmistakable trend: a marked increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The frog's growing prominence in the cultural zeitgeist is somewhat visible elsewhere, for example the revival of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. Yet, the trend in gaming seems especially powerful.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Frankly, this is a movement I can fully endorse. Frogs possess natural appealing traits for game developers.

  • Weird Little Guys: They are incredibly easy to be designed as endearing characters that often become a highlight in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their stretchy limbs and sticky tongues enable a myriad of unique mechanics.

Many of the showcased games smartly employ these traits. For instance the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games confirmed for release before the year has officially commencedโ€”and the potential for moreโ€”the stage is set for it to be the most significant year yet.

If these games are received positivelyโ€”and traditionally, games from this showcase tend to succeedโ€”we might just be entering a true frog gaming renaissance.
